W&L Falls to Division I William & Mary, 70-55

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- William and Mary used runs to begin each half and defeated Washington and Lee, 70-55, in men's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

The Tribe jumped out to a 6-0 lead six minutes into the game. It was not until W&L freshman forward Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) hit a three-pointer at the 13:33 mark that the Generals jumped on the board. W&M increased its lead to 13-3, however, the Generals used a 13-7 run over the next four minutes to close the lead to four points at 20-16 on a jumper by freshman center Mark Franceski (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono).

The Tribe held a 31-21 advantage at halftime and came out on a 6-0 run to begin the second half and increased its lead to 37-21. W&L cut the deficit to 12 points at 51-39 with 7:22 to play, however, would get no closer against its Division I opponent. The Tribe grabbed its largest lead of the game at 20 points (65-45) with 2:38 to play.

Stuart led the Generals (2-3) with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior forward Scott Hetterman (Falls Church, Va,.Landon) chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds for the Generals, who were outrebounded by the Tribe, 39-31.

W&M (2-4) freshman Thomas Viglianco tallied career highs with 12 points and five rebounds to lead the Tribe.

W&L shot only 8-of -26 (.308) from the field in the first half, however, came back to shoot 12-of-23 (.522) in the final 20 minutes. The Tribe finished 21-of-52 (.404) from the field. William and Mary was 22-32 (.688) from the free throw line, compared to just 8-of-13 (.615) for the Generals.

W&L returns to action when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a game at 3:00 pm on Saturday.
