HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tied her own school single-game scoring record with 35 points in leading Washington and Lee to a 73-64 win over Eastern Mennonite in ODAC women's basketball action on Friday evening.
The Generals (4-3, 3-1) opened a 31-11 lead with 7:56 remaining in the first half via a 13-0 run. However, EMU (2-6, 0-4) ended the half on a 19-0 run to cut W&L's lead to just one-point (31-30) at the break.
The teams battled back and forth for much of the second half before the Generals forged ahead by seven points with under a minute remaining and sealed the game at the free throw line.
Mentz continued her hot shooting from the foul line, hitting 13-of-16 attempts. She also collected 13 rebounds on the night. Freshman forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) added a career-high 19 points and junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) tallied 10 points and 20 rebounds.
The Generals hit 20-of-26 free throws in the game and outrebounded the Royals, 52-34.
Sophomore guard Emily Mullet led EMU with 29 points on 12-of-27 shooting. She leads the nation in scoring, averaging 26.3 points per game after the night's action. Mentz is third in the country, now averaging 25.7 points per game.
Washington and Lee returns to the court tomorrow as it takes on Bridgewater at 4:00 pm in Bridgewater, Va.
