GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sophomore forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon School) scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the second half, including the go-ahead basket, to lead visiting Washington and Lee to a 50-48 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball victory over Guilford Wednesday night.

Hettermann's heroics helped the Generals (1-8, 1-3 ODAC) to their first win and Washington and Lee's fifth straight triumph over Guilford (3-7, 2-2 ODAC).

The Quakers extended a five-point halftime lead to nine points after rookie Robert Spence (Apex, N.C./Southeast Raleigh) converted a fast-break layup with 15:37 remaining. The Quakers held the 35-26 edge until junior forward Bob Bustamante (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) triggered a 19-6 Generals' run with a three-pointer at the 13:22 mark. Guilford made just three of 14 field goals during Washington and Lee's spurt.

Hettermann's layup with 6:50 left gave the Generals their first lead of the second half and Guilford never regained the advantage. While Hettermann's basket marked Washington and Lee's final field goal of the game, the Generals preserved the win with eight of 10 free throws down the stretch. The Quakers made only 10-of-31 second-half shots (32.3%), including one of nine three-point attempts, senior Jaron Randall's (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day) trey at the buzzer.

Washington and Lee senior Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) scored 11 points, nine in the first half. The Generals overcame 26 turnovers, which led to 26 Guilford points, thanks to 47.2 percent shooting from the floor and a 37-30 rebounding advantage. Rookie center David Bode (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) had a game-high eight boards and six points.

Randall paced the Quakers with a season-high 13 points, three assists and four steals.

Washington and Lee hosts Roanoke Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m., in ODAC play.
