LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior righthander Chad Coward hurled a complete-game, seven-hit shutout to lead Guilford to a 3-0 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC Baseball Tournament action in Lynchburg, Va.
Guilford (25-17) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating its' first run when sophomore catcher Nick Black perfectly executed a squeeze bunt to score senior leftfielder Kevin Moore. Two batters later, sophomore rightfielder Zach Whicker scored on a balk by W&L freshman righthander Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy). The Quakers increased their lead to 3-0 in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Luke Kempton.
W&L (20-15) made things interesting in the top of the ninth inning, placing runners on second and third with just one out, but Coward was able to retire the next two batters to preserve his school-record fifth shutout of the year.
W&L was paced at the plate by senior first baseman Russell Wrenn (Baltimore, Md./Gilman), who went 3-for-4 on the day. Senior rightfielder Schuyler Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) chipped in with two hits in four at bats. Hanson took the loss (7-3) despite going the distance and allowing only three earned runs.
W&L's season now ends, while Guilford will advance to play the loser of Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan.
