LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team improved to 18-13, 7-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a pair of wins over visiting Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday afternoon. The Generals claimed the first contest by a 4-2 score before squeaking out a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, junior righthander David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) hurled a complete-game three-hitter to propel W&L (18-13, 7-7 ODAC) to the win. Sigler (6-4) pitched a hitless 4 2/3 innings before surrendering two unearned runs following a hit by Royals' first-baseman Mike Gale (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance). W&L led throughout the entire contest, which was begun on April 8th before being suspended due to rain. W&L held a 3-0 lead entering today's action, and was able to hold on for the 4-2 win. The Generals were led at the plate by freshman second-baseman Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), who went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, W&L received another tremendous pitching effort from senior Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady). The southpaw hurled 6 2/3 innings, allowing only two earned runs before surrendering to fellow senior David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), who retired the final batter for his third save of the season. With the win, Stakem improved his pitching record to 3-3 on the year. The game was tied at 2-2 after 5 1/2 innings, but the Generals were able to rally for the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Senior first-baseman Russell Wrenn (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, freshman designated hitter Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) laced another double down the left-field line, scoring the game-winning run. Gladysz led W&L in the second contest with a 2-for-2 performance. Gale and junior centerfielder Mike Carpenter (New Hope, Va./Fort Defiance) led EMU with three hits apiece.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday, April 22nd, when they travel to Lynchburg College for a 12:00 pm doubleheader. The Generals must sweep both contests from the Hornets to secure the final berth in the upcoming ODAC Tournament (April 28-30).
