NORFOLK, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team split an afternoon doubleheader with fifth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday. The Generals blew by the Marlins, 10-1, in the opener, before suffering a 4-2 setback in the nightcap.
In the opener, junior righthander David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) hurled a complete-game five hitter to propel W&L (16-13, 5-7 ODAC) to the win. Sigler (5-4) outdueled VWC ace Brian Corbo, who took his first loss of the season (8-1). Corbo surrendered nine hits and six runs in just 4 2/3 innings of work. At the plate, the Generals were led by freshman leftfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook), who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. The victory was a true team effort, as each W&L starter banged out at least one hit.
In the nightcap, W&L took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but was not able to score again in falling by a score of 4-2. The Generals managed only four hits off VWC starter Myron Trunick, who moved to 6-1 on the year with the win. Sophomore Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) paced W&L with a 2-for 3 effort at the plate. Freshman Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) took the loss on the mound (6-2) despite working a complete-game eight-hitter. Wesleyan (27-7, 12-2 ODAC) was led offensively by Evan Spivey, who went 2-for-3 in the contest.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday, April 19th, when they host Eastern Mennonite in a 3:00 pm doubleheader that was rescheduled from Saturday, April 8th due to rain.
