W&L Defeats Southern Virginia, 21-5, In Baseball

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team improved to 15-11 on the season with a 21-5 win over cross-town foe Southern Virginia College in collegiate baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals (15-11) jumped ahead early, posting a 5-0 lead after just two innings of action thanks in large part to two RBI singles by sophomore third-baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg). Brandon Turley got the Knights (0-26) on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with a solo home-run, his first of the season. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Generals put the game away by scoring nine runs on just four hits. Each of the nine W&L starters scored a run in the frame. From there, the Generals cruised to the win, outscoring the Knights by a count of 7-4 before the game was called after the top of the eighth inning.

W&L junior David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) moved to 4-4 on the year after garnering the victory on the mound. Brandon Turley fell to 0-8 on the season for SVC, pitching six innings while giving up 16 runs. Only eight of the Generals' runs were earned, as the Knights committed 12 errors during the game. At the plate, W&L was led by Kozora, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman first-baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) also went 3-for-4 on the day.

Washington and Lee will return to action tomorrow, as it travels to Shenandoah University for a 3:00 pm non-conference matchup.
