W&L Takes Two From Washington And Jefferson

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team swept an afternoon doubleheader from visiting Washington and Jefferson College on Sunday, winning the first contest by a score of 15-1 before downing the Presidents 11-10 in the nightcap. Senior lefthander Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) led the Generals, hurling a complete game two-hitter in game one and going 4-for-4 at the plate in game two.

The Presidents (1-4) jumped ahead early in the first contest, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead. From there, the Generals took full control of the game. W&L (6-6) loaded the bases to start its half of the first, bringing sophomore catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens Episcopal) to the plate in the cleanup spot. Gosselink took advantage of the situation, blasting a grand-slam over the fence in left for a quick 4-1 lead. The home-run was the first for a W&L player at the "New" Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals tallied four more runs before the inning drew to a close. Stakem held W&J at bay for the remainder of the contest, surrendering a total of only two hits and one walk while striking out six batters.

In the nightcap, W&L looked to be in trouble as it trailed the Presidents 7-3 entering the home half of the fifth. However, four General hits combined with five W&J errors allowed W&L to claim the lead for good, putting six runs on the board in the inning for a 9-7 lead. Freshman righthander Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) hurled two innings in relief for the victory. Senior David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) retired the final two President batters of the contest for his second save of the season. Freshmen Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) chipped in with two hits apiece for the Generals. Freshman Brian Swartzlander (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area) led the Presidents in the second contest with two hits and three RBI in four at-bats.

W&L will return to action on Wednesday, March 8, when it plays host to Villa Julie College in a 3:00 pm matchup.
