LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior righthander David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) tied a school-record by tossing 13 innings to help Washington and Lee defeat Bridgewater, 2-1, in ODAC baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
Sigler upped his record to 3-4 on the season by scattering eight hits over the 13 innings, while striking out 13 Eagle batters.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game as the two combined to strand 26 baserunners during the contest (W&L - 14, BC - 12). However, neither team could take advantage until W&L senior centerfielder Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) singled home senior rightfielder Schuyler Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning.
Stakem led the Generals with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate.
Bridgewater started the scoring in the top of the first inning as freshman designated hitter Scott Hearn (Laurel, Del./Delmar) doubled home senior first baseman Robbi Moose (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) for a 1-0 lead.
The Generals tied the game at 1-1 as freshman second baseman Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) led off the bottom of the first with his fifth home run of the season. It was his third of the season to lead off the game for Washington and Lee. Hanson went 2-for-6 on the afternoon.
Bridgewater was led at the plate by Moose, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore second baseman Jamie Lawhorne (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) was 2-for-5 with a double.
Junior righthander Gene Crawford (Newport News, Va./Menchville) went 6 2/3 inning in relief to pick up his first loss of the season against six wins. Crawford struck out eight, while walking just one.
The loss dropped Bridgewater to 16-4 overall, 4-2 ODAC, while Washington and Lee improved to 14-10 overall, 4-6 ODAC.
Washington and Lee will break for finals before hosting Eastern Mennonite in a double-header on April 8. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.
