Bridgewater Outslugs W&L, 9-6, In ODAC Baseball

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Washington and Lee tallied 11 hits, including a pair of home runs, but it wouldn't be enough as Bridgewater downed the Generals, 9-6, in ODAC baseball action on Thursday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va.

W&L (11-10, 1-6) got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning as freshman second baseman Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) started the game with a lead off home run, his second of the season to start a game and fourth overall. However, the Eagles would respond with three runs in the bottom of the first, two coming on a home run by senior first baseman Robbi Moose.

The Generals added single runs in the second and third innings to tie the score at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning before the Eagles (15-2, 3-0) would strike again, adding two runs in the bottom of the third, three in the fourth, and one fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead.

W&L sliced the BC lead to 9-4 in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by senior shortstop David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) and added two more runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run homer by senior centerfielder Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady).

However, with one gone in the top of the ninth, Bridgewater went to Gene Crawford in relief and he closed the door for his third save of the season.

Washington and Lee was paced by Stakem, who was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Sophomore third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) went 2-for-5 with a double, while sophomore catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens Episcopal) and senior left fielder Jon Madden (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) each went 2-for-4 with a two-bagger. Junior David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) went four innings on the mound to pick up the loss (2-4).

Bridgewater was paced by Moose, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Fionn Fitzgerald went 7 2/3 innings on the mound to pick up the win (3-0).

W&L will return to the diamond on Saturday as it hosts Randolph-Macon in a key ODAC double-header. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.
