HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team earned its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory of the season, splitting a doubleheader with the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon. W&L claimed the opener by a count of 4-2 before falling in the nightcap, 1-0.
The Generals (9-9, 1-5 ODAC) jumped ahead early in the first contest when freshman second-baseman Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) belted the first pitch of the game over the outfield wall for a 1-0 W&L lead. The margin grew in the second inning as the Generals added three more runs, two of which were unearned. Senior Jon Madden (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) keyed the rally with an RBI single. Senior righthander David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) made the lead stand, hurling a complete game eight-hitter for the win. Sigler allowed only one earned run over seven innings while striking out nine.
In the nightcap, Hampden Sydney starter Joe Pozda outdueled Generals' starter Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) for the 1-0 win. The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Tigers (7-8, 2-5 ODAC) were able to rally for the only run of the game. H-SC first-baseman Mike Duncan reached base after being hit by a Stakem pitch. He advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a Neal Herndon RBI single. Herndon's game-winning single was one of only three H-SC hits in the contest.
The Generals will return to action on Sunday, when they host West Virginia Tech in a 12:00 pm non-conference doubleheader.
