Hanson Propels W&L Past Mary Washington, 8-3

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hurled a complete-game six hitter and belted two home-runs in leading the Washington and Lee baseball team past Mary Washington College by a score of 8-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Generals (8-8) jumped ahead early, putting three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning off Eagles' starter Reed Shabman (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg). MWC pulled within 3-1 in the top of the second, with the major blow being a Jay Johnston (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) triple. Hanson increased the W&L lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning, curling a line-drive two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole. He drilled his second round-tripper just one inning later, in almost identical fashion, except with no runners on base. The Eagles mounted one last comeback effort, tallying two runs in the top of the sixth. From there, Hanson would cruise to the win, allowing only one MWC hit over the final three frames.

For the game, Hanson tallied three hits in five at-bats, scored two runs, and amassed three RBI. His older brother David, a senior shortstop for the Generals, banged out two hits in four at-bats, as did senior rightfielder Schuyler Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and sophomore third-baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). Marshall added two RBI for W&L. The Eagles were led by Mike Churchward (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), who connected for two hits in four at-bats, scoring a run and collecting one RBI. Rob Boese (Robbinsville, N.J./West Windsor) pitched masterfully in relief for the Eagles, hurling 4 2/3 innings while allowing only five hits and no earned runs. With the win, Michael Hanson moves to 4-1 on the mound for the Generals, while Shabman falls to 2-1 on the season.

W&L will return to action on Saturday, when it travels to Hampden-Sydney College for a 12:00 pm Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader.
