W&L Downs Bates In 10 Inning Thriller, 11-10

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team opened its home schedule on Wednesday afternoon with a come-from-behind 11-10 win over Bates College in 10 innings.

W&L (2-4) jumped out to an 8-2 lead after just four innings, but allowed the visiting Bobcats to climb back into the contest. Bates (0-1) scored a combined eight runs in the fifth thru eighth innings off three Generals' relief pitchers. The Bobcats regained the lead when second-baseman Pat Collins knocked home two teammates with an RBI single off Generals freshman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep). Bates added another run in the top of the eighth, taking a 10-8 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Bates reliever Kevin Walsh retired the first two Generals in the ninth, but W&L was able to rally, eventually tying the contest when junior Jason May (Houston, Texas/St. John's) scored on an error by the Bobcats' second baseman. The Generals then won the contest in the 10th when sophomore catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) singled past a drawn-in infield, scoring senior Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) for the winning run.

Stakem led the Generals at the plate, going 2-for-4 and collecting 3 RBI. Senior first-baseman Russell Wrenn (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) chipped in with three hits in five at-bats on the day. Freshman standout Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) collected the win, striking out two in working a perfect 10th inning on the mound.

W&L will face Muhlenberg College on Saturday in an afternoon doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 12:00 pm on the "New" Smith Field.
