Generals Fall In Overtime To Shenandoah, 74-72

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Washington and Lee overcame a 15-point halftime deficit (38-23) to force overtime before falling to Shenandoah, 74-72, in women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

W&L (1-2) shot just 26.9 percent in the opening half, but recovered to shoot 51.4 percent in the second half in forcing the overtime period.

The Generals led by two points (66-64) with 1:05 remaining in regulation; however, the Hornets forced overtime on a jumper by Carrie Weimer with 44 seconds left in regulation. Neither team could break the deadlock and the teams headed to overtime.

In the extra frame, the Generals took the lead (71-70) with 37 seconds remaining, but Wiemer again hit a jumper to put the Hornets ahead, this time with 16 seconds remaining. Wendy Legge extended the lead to 74-72 by hitting one-of-two free throws, but the Generals were unable to get a shot off in the final five seconds.

Junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored a game-high 27 points and added 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored 13 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and dished out six assists. She was 11-of-11 from the foul line bringing her season total to 38-of-40 (.950) on the year from the charity stripe. Freshman guard Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) added 12 points and three assists.

Shenandoah (1-1) was led by Adina Trammel, who posted 12 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, two blocks and six steals. Weimer scored 19 points and claimed 10 rebounds, while Legge totaled 16 points and six boards.

The Generals will be in action again on Wed., Nov. 29 when they host Lynchburg in an 8:00 pm contest.
