W&L Survives Against Lynchburg, 61-60

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) hit one-of-two free throws with five seconds remaining to give the Generals a 61-60 win over Lynchburg on Thursday evening in Lynchburg, Va.

W&L (9-6, 6-5) shot 51.9 percent in the opening half en route to a 36-17 halftime advantage. However, the Hornets (4-10, 2-8) stormed back in the second stanza to take a 58-53 lead with 3:00 remaining.

Sophomore forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) then tied the score at 60-60 on a lay-up with 43 seconds remaining, setting up Morton's free throws on the Generals' next possession.

W&L was led by Mentz, who scored a season-high 26 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She also collected a team-high eight rebounds. Senior guard Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) provided some drama of her own on the evening, scoring 11 points and breaking the W&L career scoring record. She now claims 1,084 points, surpassing the former record of 1,080 held by Chrissy Burghardt '99.

Lynchburg was paced by Beth Carter, who scored 18 points, many coming in the Hornets' second half comeback.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday afternoon as it travels to Guilford for a 2:00 pm contest.
