LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore guard Kelly Smith (Duffield, Va./Rye Cove) canned a 15-foot jumper with just two seconds left on the clock to propel the Emory & Henry women's basketball team to a 56-54 victory over Washington and Lee on Tuesday night in the Warner Center.
Trailing 32-27 at the break, Washington and Lee (6-4, 4-3 ODAC) opened the second half on a 13-2 run to take a 40-34 lead with 14:20 remaining. The Wasps, however, were able to regroup and come back for the narrow victory.
Smith tallied a game-high 18 points in the win. Other players in double-figures for the Wasps (5-4, 4-1 ODAC) were sophomore guard Karen Pursifull (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) who scored 11 points, and freshman center Lindsay McKnight (Chuckey, Tenn./Greeneville) with 10.
Washington and Lee senior Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) led the Generals with 17 points, including three-of-six from from behind the three-point arc. Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md/Centennial) and Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) each tallied 10 points in the loss. In addition, Mentz grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Of note, Emory and Henry did not attempt a free throw throughout the entire contest. W&L shot 49 percent (24-of-49) for the game, but was hindered by 24 turnovers. On the game, Emory & Henry shot 37 percent (24-of-65), but canned 8-of-15 three-pointers for 53 percent.
W&L will return to action on January 15, when it hosts Guilford in a 2:00 pm contest.
