LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team set a new school record for wins in a season (20) by defeating Virginia Wesleyan, 13-6, in the ODAC Baseball Tournament on Saturday evening. The former record of 19 wins in a season has stood since t he 1912 season.
W&L now faces Bridgewater in the tournament final. The Generals must win both games to claim the championship.
With the game tied 6-6 heading to the top of the eighth inning, W&L (20-11) scored seven runs in the eighth to cruise to the seven-run victory.
Junior lefthander Chris Stakem (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) went the distance to earn the victory and even his mark at 3-3.
Junior first baseman Russell Wrenn (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) led the W&L offense with two hits in three at bats and three RBI. Virginia Wesleyan (27-13) was paced at the plate by Evan Spivey, who was 2-for-3 with four RBI.
The Generals now face Bridgewater in the final at 1:00 pm. Should the Generals win the opener, they must play the Eagles again at 4:30 pm for the title.
