Baseball Drops Heartbreaker To Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2, In ODAC Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore pitcher David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) allowed just three runs (two earned) in eight innings of work, but it wasn't enough as the Washington and Lee baseball team was defeated by Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2, in the opening round of the ODAC Baseball Tournament at Lynchburg City Stadium on Friday evening.

The Generals (18-11) provided Sigler with an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth inning to assume a 2-0 lead. Senior catcher E.J. Murphy (Glenside, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) began the inning with a single and was moved to second base on a s ingle by junior right fielder Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County). Freshman third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) then advanced Murphy and Batcheller one base with a sacrifice bunt. Junior shortstop David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) brought home Murphy on a sacrifice fly to center field and junior leftfielder Jon Madden (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) singled home Batcheller.

Virginia Wesleyan (27-11) trimmed the W&L lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning as the Marlin's Josh Longe singled home Andy Wissinger. Wesleyan would then assume the lead for good in the sixth inning as Sigler hit two batters and walked two others to force i n a run. The Marlins then added the game winner on a fielder's choice.

Sigler fell to 8-2 on the season, recording his first loss since Feb. 18, his first start of the season. David Parker (6-5) earned the victory for the Marlins.

Murphy paced the Generals from the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Longe led VWC with a 2-for-3 day with one RBI.
