Baseball Splits With Guilford; Clinches Spot In ODAC's

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team (18-10, 9-7 ODAC) split a doubleheader with Guilford (17-21, 6-10 ODAC) on Saturday afternoon at the New Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first game by a score of 5-1 and the Quakers came back to take the second half, 8-4. Lynchburg and Randolph-Macon split a doubleheader this afternoon clinching a spot in the ODAC Tournament for W&L for the first time since 1996.

In the first game, W&L sophomore pitcher David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./ Lampeter-Strasburg) shut down the Quakers, allowing just four hits and one run, while striking out six. The win moves SiglerUs record to 8-1 on the season. The eight wins ties a 64-year old record for wins in a season by a W&L pitcher. He now shares the record with W&L Hall of Famer Emerson Dickman Guilford senior starter Jeff Joyce (Reidsville, N.C./ Rockingham County) took the loss.

The Generals scored two runs in the third inning, two in the fourth, and added one in the fifth to roll to the four-run victory. W&L was led offensively by senior second baseman Patrick Hall (Houston, Tex./ Episcopal), who went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Freshman third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./ Glenelg) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior designated hitter Andy Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./ William Penn Charter) recorded the first triple in the history of the New Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

In the second game, Guilford used four-run innings in the first and third stanzas to roll to an 8-4 victory. The Quakers were led offensively by sophomore outfielder Chris Butcher (High Point, N.C./ Ledford), who went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI. Senior catcher Andy Reed (Charlotte, N.C./ Myers Park) went 2-for-3 with with two RBI. Junior right fielder Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./ Patrick County) went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI for W&L.

W&L's senior starter Bob Weston (Columbia, S.C./ Woodberry Forest) took the loss falling to 7-3 on the season. Guilford's Chad Coward (Siler City, N.C./ Jordan-Matthews) struck out eight Generals in gaining the win, moving his record to 4-8 on the season.
