LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team (16-9, 7-6 ODAC) opened its new Cap'n Dick Smith Field with a 9-3 victory over Lynchburg (13-17, 6-6 ODAC) on Monday afternoon. The win moves W&L into fourth place in the ODAC.
Junior shortstop David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./ Pace Academy) got the scoring started with a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning to give the Generals an early 2-0 lead. W&L then exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to build a 9-3 lead and rolled to the six-run victory.
Sophomore W&L pitcher David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./ Lampeter-Strasburg) ran his record to 7-2, going all nine innings, striking out 11 Hornets, and walking only one. Lynchburg's freshman pitcher Blair Hayden (Absecon, N.J./ Holy Spirit) took the loss.
The Generals were led offensively by Hanson, who went 4-for-5 on the day, with two doubles and three RBI. Senior second baseman Patrick Hall (Houston, Tex./ Episcopal) and junior left fielder Jon Madden (Rockville, Md./ Georgetown Prep) each went 2-for-5 on the day. Lynchburg was led by junior outfielder Mark Girard (Williamstown, Mass./ Mt. Greglock), who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
