LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee's women's basketball team (10-10, 9-7 ODAC) outscored Bridgewater 20-6 in the final 7:59 of the game to defeat the Eagles (14-5, 11-4) by a score of 66-57. The win was the GeneralsU sixth in the last seven games and first ever victory in ten meetings with the Eagles.
After Bridgewater scored the first four points of the game, W&L scored the next 12 points to take a 12-4 lead with 13:57 remaining in the first half. The Generals then took a nine-point, 34-25 lead into halftime. The first half surge was sparked by 68.8 percent (11-16) shooting from the floor.
The Eagles took control early in the second half and tied the game at 40-40 with 12:33 left in the game. Bridgewater built the lead to five (51-46) with 7:59 left in the game. The Generals then went on their before mentioned run to cruise to nine-point victory.
The Generals had four players score in double figures. They were led by freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) who posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. Senior forward Chri ssy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, her eighth double-double of the season. Junior guard Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./ Athens Academy) and Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) sc o red 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Freshman center Sarah Hagood (Shawsville, Va./ Shawsville) scored a career-high 12 points for the Eagles. Junior center Amanda Kyger (Timberville, Va./ Broadway) chipped in with 11 points. Junior guard Heather Landes (Verona, Va./ Fort Defiance) set a career-high with 12 assists.
The win was also the first loss suffered by any of the top three ODAC teams (Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon, and Roanoke), to any but each other. It also put the Generals in sole position of fifth place in the ODAC.
W&L will look for its seventh win in its last eight games, when it hosts Emory and Henry (7-13, 7-9) on Thursday night at the Warner Center. Tip-off will be at 7:30. The game will be the last home constst in the career of Chrissy Burghardt. The Gen erals won the first meeting against the Wasps, 56-66 on Jan. 30 in Emory, Va.
