SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee (6-17, 5-12) shot only 9.6 percent from the floor in the first half in losing to Roanoke (11-12, 8-9), 72-64 in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday night at the Bast Center, before a crowd of 1,200 fans.
The Maroons stormed out to a 10-1 lead with 14:17 remaining in the first half, and the Generals did not score their first field goal until 11:31 left before halftime. Despite scoring only two field goals in the first stanza, W&L trailed only 27-17 at halftime.
After the Generals cut the lead to seven on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./ Elkin) nine seconds into the second half, Roanoke went on a 21-4 run to take a 48-24 lead with 11:51 left in the game. The Generals cut the 24-point lead to just eight on several occasions, but could get no closer as they lost by that same eight-point margin. The Generals atoned for their first half shooting performance by shooting 54.3 percent in the second half (19-35).
W&L was led by junior center Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./ Trumbull), who posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Ballard, who also scored 14 points. Freshman forward Bob Bustamante (Miami, Fla./ Christopher Columbus) scored 15 points off the bench and made good on both of his three-point attempts. The Maroons were led by guard Robby Pridgen, who scored 20 points off the bench.
The Generals will travel to Bridgewater to face the Eagles on Monday night in the regular season finale. The 7:30 contest will decide who will be placed as the seventh seed in next weekend's ODAC Tournament in Salem.
