LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior guard Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./ Athens Academy) layed in a shot with 1.1 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Washington and Lee women's basketball team (9-9, 8-6 ODAC) a thrilling 55-54 victory over Randolph-Macon Woman's College (5-13, 3-12). The win was the fifth in a row for the Generals. Of those five wins, four of them were won in the last 30 seconds of the game. Each of those four nail-biter were won by two points or less.
Earlier in the game, senior Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) became the first W&L player in program history to score her 1,000th career point. She did so on a lay-up with 7:16 remaining in the game.
The Generals opened up a 16-3 lead in the early stages of the game and held it until 10:07 remained in the first half. At that point, the WildCats went on a 15-2 run to tie the game (18-18) with 6:48 remaining in the first half. The Generals took a 33- 29 lead into halftime.
W&L built the lead to seven (49-42) with 7:16 left in the game, but R-MWC cut the lead to one (53-52) with 1:54 left. The WildCats then took their first lead (54-53) of the game when senior guard Stephanie Marcial (Blairstown, N.J./ Blair Academy) drained a ten-footer with six seconds remaining. The Generals then traveled the length of the floor and fed the ball to Miller, who hit the lay-up with 1.1 ticks left.
Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) led the W&L attack, notching her fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Burghardt scored 12 points on the night and added five steals.
The WildCats were led by junior center Tara Carleton (Dawsonville, Ga./ Dawson), who scored a game-high 25 points. Senior guard Eryka Skore (West Hills, Calif./ Calabasas) chipped in with 12 points.
The Generals will look for their sixth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, when they host Guilford at 2:00 at the Warner Center. On. Jan. 23, the Generals notched their first-ever win against Guilford by a 63-61 score in Greensboro, N.C.
