Mentz Shows Hornets What The Buzz Is All About; Generals Win, 82-54

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) broke a school record for points scored in a game with 30 as the Washington and Lee women's basketball team (7-9, 6-6 ODAC) defeated Lynchburg (4-13, 3-10 ODAC), 82-54 , at the Warner Center on Thursday evening. The victory was head coach Terri Dadio Campbell's 50th at W&L and was the third in a row for the Generals. The 82 points scored by the Generals was the most this season.

W&L got out to a quick 19-6 lead with 12:28 remaining in the first half. However, the Hornets stormed back to cut the lead to three (22-19) with 9:06 left in the first half. The Generals then went to halftime with a 36-30 lead. After Lynchburg scor ed the first two points of the second stanza, W&L outscored them 46-22 the rest of the way to roll to the 28-point victory.

Mentz led the way for the Generals with her 30 points and nine rebounds. She was 12-of-17 from the free throw line. Junior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) scored 10 points, and added six rebounds and four assists. Senior forward Chr issy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) scored nine points and led the team with 12 rebounds. Burghardt is only 14 points away from becoming the first player in W&L history to score 1,000 points in a career.

Lynchburg was led by freshman forward Erika Smith (Chesapeake, Va./ Great Bridge), who scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Freshman Joharri Bass (Roseland, Va./ Nelson County) scored eight points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked seven General shots./ P

W&L will look to win its school-record fourth game in a row at Emory and Henry on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off will be at 7:00.
