Generals Fall Short of Catching Tigers by Tails, 80-59

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team (3-13, 2-8 ODAC) hung tough at Hampden-Sydney (16-1, 10-1 ODAC), but not close enough as the seventh-ranked Tigers came out victorious on Wednesday evening, 80-59.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 18-8 lead with 12:35 remaining in the first half and pushed the lead to 16 (37-21) at halftime. The Generals cut the lead to 15 (55-40) with 9:39 remaining in the game, but could get no closer as the Tigers cruised to the 21-point victory.

Three players registered in double-figure scoring for the Generals. They were led by sophomore guard Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./ Paul Blazer) who scored 16 points and a grabbed a career-high six rebounds. Junior center Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./ Trumbull) scored 13 points on 4-of-4 field goal shooting. Peterson blocked four H-SC shots, which gave him the most blocked shots in a game by any Old Dominion Athletic Conference player this season. Senior guard Kevin Cobbin (Jacksonville, Fla./ Bolles) added 11 points. The Tigers were paced by junior guard T.J. Grimes (Onancock, Va./ Nandua), who scored 23 points.

The Generals shot 42.3 percent for the game, but improved to shoot 50 percent in the second half. The Tigers shot 39.1 percent from the field for the game but shot 56.3 percent from behind the three-point arc.

W&L will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Guilford on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. Tip-off will be at 2:00. The Generals won at Guilford in this season's previous meeting, 67-55 on Nov. 24.
