NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team competed for the first time for their 2026-27 season on Saturday at the Christopher Newport Invitational, facing off against Longwood and Hampton in mock-dual format.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Junior Mary Kate Kahl highlighted the morning session for the Generals against Division I Longwood, as she defeated Farah Asaad 6-2, 6-2.
• The Lancers won all three doubles matches and the remaining five singles matches. Kahl and classmate Allie Murrell nearly went the distance against Asta Miettinen and Asem Shoybek, but the Lancer duo was victorious, 7-5.
• Murrell then lined up at No. 1 singles against Feline van Eijkelenburg, who took a one-set lead over Murrell 6-3. Murrell played a closer second set, forcing it into a tiebreak before being edged out 11-9.
• In the Generals' afternoon match, the team squared off against Hampton and was on match point in doubles play before rain suspended action. Kahl and Murrell picked up a 7-5 win at No. 1, while junior Greer Webb and sophomore Margarette Berdy led 6-6 (7-6) at No. 3 when play was stopped. 

UP NEXT:
The Generals will match up against in-region foe Christopher Newport at 9:00 a.m. to kick-off Sunday's action at the CNU Invite. W&L will then continue its match against Hampton at 12:30 p.m.
