No. 16 Men's Lacrosse lights up the scoreboard against Averett

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 16 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team posted its second shutout of the season and second win in as many nights on Wednesday evening, topping Averett by a 28-0 final.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (10-5, 7-1 ODAC) put up 12 goals in the first quarter with seven different players scoring. First-year Tucker Davis led the way in the opening 15 minutes with four goals, followed by three goals and two assists from first-year Luke Caldwell.
  • W&L went on to score six goals in the second and fourth quarters, plus an additional four goals in the third. First-year Garrett Ferguson scored twice in the second quarter and had an assist, senior Jack Booth tallied two points in the third, and sophomore JD Matson and first-year Gray Kallen combined for five points in the fourth.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Davis notched a team-high six points on the night on four goals and two assists. Caldwell (3g, 2a) and Kallen (1g, 4a) both had five points and Ferguson (3g, 1a) finished with four points. In total, 15 different Generals had multiple points and 24 different players had at least one point.
  • The W&L face-off unit won 28-of-31 face-offs led by 9-for-9 from junior Thomas Moxley (9gb) and another 6-for-6 from sophomore Israel Mikkelson (5gb). First-year Hunter Hodges won 8-of-9 with four ground balls and sophomore Jack Bryant rounded out the group with a 5-for-7 night.
  • Sophomore Charlie Hodulik led the W&L defense with three caused turnovers, with junior Will Abramson and first-year Jack Ege both causing two. The Generals, as a team, ended the night with 14 caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore JJ Kim picked up the win in goal after playing the first quarter. Senior Ryan Boyd covered the next 22:13 and made two saves before junior John Nagy played the final 22:47 and made three saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior James Haley compiled three points in the game, all in the first quarter, to move into sole possession of fourth place on the program's all-time points list (237). He can pass former teammate Hillis Burns '25 (248) with 12 more points.
  • Two of Haley's three points were assists, which moved him past Gavin Molinelli '05 for the 10th-most assists in program history (94). Burns is next on the list at 96, with Bryan Chasney '74 (97) another spot up.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals' offense took 60 shots in the game, including a high of 24 in the first quarter, while the defense allowed just eight total attempts to the Cougars.
  • Averett turned the ball over 30 times and went 18-for-26 on clears, while the Generals had 17 turnovers and went 24-for-26 on clears.
  • The final ground ball count favored W&L, 55-19.

The Generals will be back in action next Saturday, April 18, when they host Randolph at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the opening face-off, the Generals' 14-player senior class will be recognized as part of Senior Day festivities.
