Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 20 Men's Lacrosse stays hot, puts up big offensive numbers in Senior Day win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 20 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team posted its fifth-straight win on Saturday to celebrate Senior Day, 29-1, over Randolph, the team's third consecutive game with at least 26 goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (11-5, 8-1 ODAC) were hot out of the gates with 13 goals in the opening quarter. Senior James Haley led the offense with four of those scores, plus five assists, to have a hand in nine of the team's first-quarter goals.
  • Three different W&L players scored once each in the second quarter, as the team built a 16-0 halftime lead, before eight more goals came in the third. Sophomore Thomas Garcia and first-years Gray Kallen and Jack Payne each scored twice to pace the offense in the third.
  • Despite already holding a large lead, the W&L sideline had extra reason to celebrate the 20th goal of the game, as the Garcia brothers teamed up for the goal, with senior Nick Garcia finding younger brother Thomas for the score.
  • W&L tacked on three more goals in the first 5:30 of the fourth before the WildCats (3-13, 1-8 ODAC) scored their lone goal of the game at the 8:37 mark thanks to Parker Eastman.
  • Junior James Cardillo found the back of the net twice over the final seven minutes of regulation to round out the scoring, with Payne and sophomore JD Matson getting one assist each.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • All of Haley's game-high nine points came in the first quarter, with his five assists setting a new career high. Cardillo set career highs across the board for points (7), goals (4) and assists (3), with Payne adding a season-high five points on two goals and three helpers.
  • Kallen had a strong all-around game with four points (3g, 1a), three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while T. Garcia and first-years Tucker Davis and Max Fertels each went for three points on two goals and an assist.
  • The W&L face-off unit went a combined 28-of-33 in the game, with five different players featured. Junior Thomas Moxley led the way with a 13-for-13 day (7gb). Sophomore Israel Mikkelson was 7-for-7 (5gb), sophomore Jack Bryant went 6-for-8 (3gb) and senior Jack Booth went 1-for-1 in his second career face-off try (2/2).
  • Kallen's three caused turnovers led W&L, with senior Colin Beatty, junior Spencer Surface and sophomore Matt Blanton each causing two. Beatty was also among the leaders in ground balls for the game with four.
  • Senior Ryan Boyd went 2-for-2 in save opportunities, as he covered second-quarter goalie duties for the Generals. Junior John Nagy saved another two shots from the WildCats in the final 9:42 of play, while sophomore JJ Kim (W, 15:00), junior Nick De Cain (10:21) and first-year Zach Rosenberg (9:57) did not face a shot.
  • Cole Robbins was the top Randolph player with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Goalie Keegan Slider started and made 13 saves in the first half.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Haley continued to move up program offensive leaderboards on Saturday, as his nine points puts him at 246 for his career, just two behind Hillis Burns '25 for third most in program history.
  • Haley's career-high five assists leave him just one away from becoming the eighth player in program history with 100 for a career. He also is now five goals behind Burns (152) for sixth place in program history.
  • The Generals scooped up 71 ground balls as a team, the most in a single game since recording 80 on March 12, 2007, against Hood.
  • W&L's 29 goals scored vaults the team into fifth place on the program's leaderboard for team goals in a season (280). One spot above them at 329 is the 2019 team.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals finished the day with 66 shot attempts (47 on goal) and allowed just eight to the WildCats (five on goal).
  • W&L went 18-of-19 on clear attempts and held Randolph to just 17-of-30 (.567). The WildCats also turned the ball over 31 times, with the Generals causing 18 of those.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will have next week off from game action before they close out the regular season at No. 3 Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday, April 25. The winner of that game will clinch the ODAC regular season title and the conference tournament's top seed.
