WINCHESTER, Va. – Washington and Lee University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach
Gene McCabe picked up the 300th win in his collegiate coaching career on Tuesday evening in a 26-4 win at Shenandoah.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (9-5, 6-1 ODAC) struck for 10 goals in the opening quarter from eight different scorers. Senior James Haley and first-year Luke Caldwell both racked up a goal and three assists in the opening frame.
- W&L tallied each of the next six goals, as well, in the second quarter to run its lead up to 16-1, before heading to the halftime break up, 18-3. First-year Garrett Ferguson had a team-best three goals for the Blue and White in the opening half.
- After just one goal scored in the third quarter, which came from sophomore Thomas Garcia, the Generals outscored the Hornets, 7-0, in the fourth quarter to put a stamp on the win. Junior Harrison Hanson scored five of the team's seven fourth-quarter goals.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Haley (1g, 4a), Caldwell (2g, 3a) and Hanson (5g) paced the W&L offense with five points each, with Haley adding two caused turnovers. First-year Tucker Davis had four points on two goals and two assists, while Ferguson (3g) and senior Elliot Cohen (2g, 1a) both had three points.
- The Generals won 26-of-34 face-offs on the night, led by a 15-for-20 game from junior Thomas Moxley, who also had a team-high nine ground balls. Sophomore Israel Mikkelson pitched in a 9-for-12 performance with seven ground balls.
- Haley was among three Generals to have a team-best two caused turnovers. He was joined in that category by sophomore James Meyer (1gb) and sophomore Charlie Hodulik (3gb). In total, 14 different W&L players caused at least one turnover.
- Sophomore JJ Kim played the first half and made three saves to pick up the win in goal. First-year Zach Rosenberg played the third quarter and made five saves on six shots, while junior Nick De Cain stopped all five shots he faced in the fourth.
- Liam Arnsmeyer and Cody Griffis had two points each for the Hornets. Arnsmeyer had two assists while Griffis scored twice.
- Kennedy Duda caused a game-high four turnovers and added four ground balls. Hunter Snow notched four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- With the win, Coach McCabe becomes just the 11th active head coach in Division III men's lacrosse to have at least 300 career coaching wins. Among those 10 other coaches, McCabe ranks seventh in career win percentage (.694).
- Haley's five-point game moved him into a tie for fourth place on the program's all-time points list with Don Carroll '76 (234). Haley is also now one assist away from tying Gavin Molinelli '05 (93) for the 10th-most assists in program history.
- Caldwell's five-point game helped him keep pace with the top scorers in the ODAC. He and Haley rank Top 2 in both assists and points this season.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Hornets 51-25 overall and 38-17 on goal. W&L took at least 15 shots in three of the four quarters, with 10 or more shots on goal in 3-of-4 quarters, as well.
- W&L more than doubled Shenandoah's ground balls output (64-30) and also held the Hornets to 0-for-4 on their man-up chances.
- The Generals finished the game 25-for-28 on clears to 20-for-26 for the hosts.
