Offensive Outburst, Stellar Pitching Leads Baseball to Dominant Win of Regent

LEXINGTON, Va.  - The Washington and Lee University baseball team kicked off the weekend with an offensive outburst, scoring 17 runs on 16 hits en route to a 17-0 (7 Inn.) win over Regent University on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (18-12-1) jumped out to an early lead in the first, scoring four runs on a pair of hits. Nathan DeWitte led off with a single before a pair of walks and a hit by pitch brought him home to make it 1-0. Andrew Thornton added an RBI single to right field, while Jackson Rogish plated another run on a wild pitch. Ian Weber capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Camdyn Teague and give W&L a 4-0 lead.
  • DeWitte singled again in the second and moved to third on an errant pick off throw before Alex Caywood drove him in with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0.
  • In the fourth, the Blue and White added three more runs. William Melton drew a lead off walk before DeWitte notched his third hit of the day with a single. After a sacrifice bunt from A. Caywood moved both runners into scoring position, Teague drove in both with a single to center. Teague later scored from first on a Thornton single to right-center, pushing the lead to 8-0.
  • W&L extended its advantage to 12-0 in the fifth. Melton doubled to start the inning before DeWitte drove him in with his fourth hit of the game. A. Caywood reached on a fielder's choice before Rogish delivered an RBI double. Teague and Thornton followed with back-to-back singles to add another run, and a Nick Caywood sacrifice fly brought home Teague.
  • The Generals continued to pour it on in the sixth. DeWitte and A. Caywood were both hit by pitches to open the inning and then stole bases to move into scoring position. Rogish and Teague each drove in a pair with consecutive singles. Thornton was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Nick Caywood added an RBI single. A wild pitch brought home another run, and after Gannon Anthony drew a walk to reload the bases, John Turner delivered an RBI single to left to cap the scoring at 17-0.
  • John Cimballa closed out the game for W&L, recording two ground outs and a strikeout to secure the shutout victory.
