Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Regent on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team celebrated their senior class with a pair of wins to complete the series sweep over Regent University on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals honored their six senior members prior to the game one this afternoon. As a group, John Turner, Landen Rucker, Nick Lagges, Bob Burr, Ben Sundell and Brody Pasieka have led the Blue and White to a 67-65-1 overall record with a 37-48-1 record in conference play while leading the team to the ODAC Tournament in 2023, 2024 and 2026.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (W, 12-2 - 7 Inn.):
  • Regent (17-22) struck first in the top of the first as an error and a walk put two runners on before Maddox German singled through the left side to drive in Nathan Vaughan for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Generals (20-12-1) responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Nathan DeWitte drew a leadoff walk and Alex Caywood was hit by a pitch to put two aboard. After a double steal moved both into scoring position, Andrew Thornton walked to load the bases. Camdyn Teague and Landen Rucker delivered back-to-back RBI singles to clear the bases, and Connor Kenny added a sacrifice fly to center to give W&L a 4-1 advantage.
  • W&L added two more in the second as DeWitte singled and A. Caywood doubled down the left-field line to put runners in scoring position. DeWitte scored on a groundout, and Teague followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-1.
  • In the third, Samuel Chase led off with a double to right-center before Jonathan French drove him in with a single. Later in the inning, Ryan McGovern launched his first career home run over the left-field fence, pushing the lead to 9-1.
  • The Generals made it 10-1 in the fourth as Teague reached on an error, advanced on a walk and hit by pitch, and scored on a French sacrifice fly.
  • Regent trimmed the deficit in the fifth when Dylan Oblepias doubled and Caleb Wood followed with an RBI double off the right-field wall.
  • W&L answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. A. Caywood doubled to right-center and later scored on an infield single by Thornton combined with an errant throw. Rucker then added an RBI single down the right-field line to make it 12-2.
  • Isaac Ly and Bob Burr combined to pitch the final two innings, allowing just one hit, with Burr striking out the final two batters to secure the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (W, 7-1 - 7 Inn.):
  • Just like game one, the Royals struck first as Maddox German and Oblepias singled to start the game before Wood drove in German with a single to center field.
  • However, the lead did not hold as the Blue and White plated four runs on four hits and an error to take a 4-1 advantage. DeWitte led off with a triple to right-center before A. Caywood doubled to center to tie the game. Nick Caywood drove in his brother two batters later with a double down the left-field line. Thornton reached and moved to second on an error, which also allowed N. Caywood to score and give W&L the lead. Rucker added another RBI with a single up the middle to cap the inning.
  • After two scoreless innings, W&L added two more in the fourth. DeWitte doubled to right-center and scored on an A. Caywood single to left. A hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases before Thornton lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in another run and extend the lead to 6-1.
  • In the fifth, Ian Weber beat out an infield single and stole second before Oakley Rempel singled to put runners on the corners. DeWitte delivered again with an RBI single to right, pushing the lead to 7-1.
  • Brody Pasieka closed out the game with three shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out one to secure the win and record the eighth save of his career, the fourth-most in program history.
