LEXINGTON, Va. – The 11th ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team earned a 15-9 non-conference victory over Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night at Watt Field.
The Generals (4-2) built an early cushion, weathered a third-quarter push by the Captains (3-1), and pulled away late behind a dominant night from Hannah Van Son and a four-goal performance from Kelly Polacek.
Game Summary
Washington and Lee came out sharp, scoring four times in the opening 4:44 to take a 4-0 lead. Christopher Newport responded with two late first-quarter goals, but the Generals carried a 4-2 advantage into the second.
W&L added four more goals in the second quarter, including back-to-back man-up tallies from Emma Marsh and Lara Baki, to stretch the lead to 8-3 at halftime.
The Captains made their strongest push in the third, scoring five goals in the period to cut into the margin. Washington and Lee answered with three goals of its own, including two quick strikes from Polacek, and took an 11-8 lead into the fourth.
The Generals closed the game with a strong final quarter, scoring four times to secure the 15-9 win. Van Son scored three times in the fourth, including two player-up goals, as W&L maintained control down the stretch.
