HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Scoring 27 runs on 29 hits across both games this afternoon, the Washington and Lee Baseball team picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) wins as they swept Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (W, 20-1 | 7 Inn.):
- The Blue and White (11-6-1) scored a season-high 20 runs on 20 hits in game one including a 12-run first frame to earn a seven inning run rule win over the Tigers (10-10).
- W&L batted around in the first inning as Nathan DeWitte led off teh game with a walk before Alex Caywood doubled to put both of them in scoring position. DeWitte scored on a wild pitch before Andrew Thornton singled up the middle to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. Nick Caywood drew a walk as well before Nick Lagges moved him and Thornton into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back singles from Camdyn Teague and Jackson Rogish drove in a pair of runs to extend the lead to four. Jonathan French and DeWitte drew two-straight five pitch walks to drive in another run.
- After a pitching change from the Tigers, A. Caywood wore a pitch to drive in the sixth run of the inning before Thornton hit a two-RBI single to left cetner to give W&L an 8-0 lead. N. Caywood cleared the bases the next at-bat as he doubled into the right center to give the Generals a 10-run advantage. Lagges drew a walk before Teague singled to load the bases once again until Rogish drove in a pair with a single to put the Generals in front by 12.
- In the top of the second, the Generals struck for two more as French was hit by a pitch before DeWitte singled. After moving over 90 feet on a wild pitch, French scored on a groundout before DeWitte plated the 14th run of the game on a passed ball.
- After keeping the Tigers hit less for the third-straight inning, W&L tacked on two more in the top of the fourth as DeWitte walked and A. Caywood was hit by a pitch to put two on. DeWitte moved over to third on a fly out before scoring the next at-bat on a N. Caywood single to right field. Lagged drove in A. Caywood on a sacrifice fly to give the Generals a 16-0 lead.
- French and DeWitte got the offense rolling again in the top of the fifth as they recorded back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners thanks to French's base running. French scored on a wild bitch before A. Caywood reached via a throwing error to put a pair of runners on the base path. DeWitte scored on a Thronton single to left before Lagges drove in a run with another sacrifice fly, giving W&L a 19-0 lead.
- The Generals final run of the game came in the top of the sixth as Rogish led off the inning with a double down the left field line before moving over 90 feet on a wild pitch. William Melton drove him in on a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Blue and White a 20-0 lead.
- The Tigers broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the sixth as Chase Sanford ended up on third following an error by the Generals'. Gib Wirt drove him in on a single to make it 20-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (W, 7-6):
- After a scoreless opening frame, the Blue and White took the first lead of the game as they scored a pair of runs on one hit in the top of the second. Lagges led off the inning with a walk before scoring on a Rogish double to left center. Rogish moved over to third on a wild pitch before Oakley Rempel walked to put runners on the corners. Rogish crossed the plate to give W&L a 2-0 lead on a fielder's choice.
- The lead expanded to three in the top of the third as N. Caywood was hit by the first pitch he saw before Lagges roped a double to left field, driving him in from first.
- Both teams were held in check for the fourth and fifth before the Blue and White tacked on three more to take a 6-0 lead in the sixth. Back-to-back walks and a single from French loaded the bases for W&L. DeWitte drove in Rogish on a sacrifice fly before A. Caywood singled to left field, driving in Rempel to extend the Generals' lead. They took a six-run lead as French was awarded home on a balk.
- With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Ian Martin wore a pitch before an error and a walk loaded the bases. Jackson Wilson drove in a pair with a double to left field to cut the lead to four.
- The Tigers cut the Generals' lead to three in the seventh as Gib Wirt singled before stealing second. He scored two batters later as Chase Sanford singled to left field to make it 6-3.
- A. Caywood led off the top of the ninth with a single before moving over 90 feet on a stolen base. He advanced to third on a wild pitch before Lagges drove him in with a single to right field to put W&L in front 7-3.
- Hampden-Sydney made it interesting in the ninth as Sanford reached on a fielder's choice and Ian Martin drew a walk. Brandon Shelhorse came in to pinch-hit and belted a three-run home run to left-center field to make it a one-run game with only one out remaining. Connor Powell reached on an error but was caught stealing by N. Caywood before Jackson Wilson flew out to secure the series sweep for the Blue and White.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Cooper Charneco (3-2) picked up his third win of the season after tossing five shutout innings with four strikeouts. He allowed two hits while walking one batter on 75 pitchers. In game two, Henry Stene (1-1) earned his first win of the season after allowing two runs (0 earned) on one hit in his 5.2 innings of work. Nathan DeWitte earned the save after pitching the final two innings, striking out three.
- Jackson Rogish led the Generals' offense on Saturday with a 5-for-7 (.714) effort with three doubles, three walks and a team-high four RBI Jonathan French, Nick Caywood, Camdyn Teague and Andrew Thornton each had four hits for the Blue and White on Saturday, with Lagges and Thornton joining Rogish with four RBI.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Alex Caywood's impressive start continued as he extended his hit streak to 18 games. A. Caywood and Camdyn Teague both had four hits in game one, tying the second-most in a single game in program history.
- The Generals notched their third-straight win, moving to 11-6-1 on the season with a 6-3-1 record in conference play. They registered a season-high 20 runs on a season-high 20 hits in game one.
