VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 16th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored at least five goals in each quarter and had 21 players log a point in a 24-5 win at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (5-4, 2-0 ODAC) had five different players score once each in the first quarter, and they got another four goals in the first three minutes of the second to race out to a 9-0 lead. Senior James Haley (2g, 1a) and first-year Luke Caldwell (1g, 2a) both had three points in the opening 18 minutes.
- The game then went nearly 10 minutes without another score before the Marlins (7-2, 1-1 ODAC) scored back-to-back goals at 2:57 and 2:33. W&L first-year Tucker Davis then scored a goal to end the half and another just eight seconds into the third quarter.
- Davis's two goals kickstarted a 13-1 Generals run that spanned until 7:15 remained in the game, leaving them up 22-3. Senior Ben Irmscher and junior Andrew Keller tallied W&L's final two goals of the game in the final three minutes to complete the scoring.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Haley and Davis led the W&L offense with six points on three goals and three assists each, while Caldwell finished up at five points on two goals and three assists. Haley added three ground balls and a caused turnover to his line, with Caldwell picking up four.
- Eight additional W&L players recorded multiple points in the game, with 21 total players registering at least one point.
- The Generals went 21-of-33 on face-offs on Saturday thanks to junior Thomas Moxley and first-year Hunter Hodges. Moxley was 12-of-18, Hodges went 9-for-15, and both players scooped up a team-high five ground balls.
- Sophomore goalie JJ Kim paced the W&L defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Jay O'Keefe led all field players with three caused turnovers plus three ground balls.
- Kim made eight saves on 11 shots faced in 37:26 to earn the win. First-year Zach Rosenberg, junior Nick De Cain, senior Ryan Boyd and junior John Nagy all saw time between the pipes, as well, combining for the final 22:34 with three saves and two goals allowed.
- Tyler Drane and Reef Krug had two points each for the VWU offense, Noah McCarty caused three turnovers and had two ground balls, and Thomas Skelly rounded out the Marlins' top performers with 15 saves in 45 minutes in goal.
TEAM STATS:
- W&L finished the day with a 56-28 advantage in total shots. They put up 15 shots or more in each of the first three quarters. Out of the 56 attempts, the Generals put 40 on goal.
- The Marlins turned the ball over 30 times in the game and went 18-of-28 on clear attempts, while W&L was successful on 23-of-25 clear attempts.
- W&L also held the advantage in the game in ground balls at 44-28. They also got to more ground balls in each quarter than the Marlins.
