LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 17 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team put up 20 goals in the first half of a 25-0 win over Guilford on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (6-4, 3-0 ODAC) scored 11 of their 20 first-half goals in the first quarter, with senior James Haley leading the way with three goals. Haley and first-year Luke Caldwell both tallied five points in the opening frame.
- W&L added another nine goals in the second quarter, paced by three from first-year Garrett Ferguson, plus three points from sophomore Jack Dalton.
- Between the excellent efforts from the W&L face-off and defensive units, the Quakers (1-5, 0-2 ODAC) were held to just one shot attempt in the first half, which was not on goal.
- Junior Harrison Hanson tallied the lone W&L goal in the third quarter, before four different players notched the final four goals of the game in the fourth quarter. Seniors Jack Booth (1g, 1a), Ben Irmscher (1g, 1a) and Sam Bassett (2a) each had two points in the second half.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Haley (3g, 2a), Caldwell (2g, 3a) and first-year Tucker Davis (2g, 3a) all had five points to lead the W&L offense. Booth followed with four points on one goal and three assists, with six additional players at three points each.
- W&L's face-off unit went a combined 24-of-29 (.828) with 14 ground balls. Sophomore Jack Bryant led the unit in wins (9/13), while junior Thomas Moxley won 8-of-8 with six ground balls and first-year Hunter Hodges went 7-for-8 with five ground balls.
- Senior Colin Beatty and first-year Jack Ege both scooped up four ground balls. Senior Chris Datz and juniors Will Abramson and Jeremy Horne led the defense with two caused turnovers each, and they combined for four ground balls.
- Four goalies saw time between the pipes for the Generals. Sophomore JJ Kim got the win as the starter, before junior Nick De Cain covered in the second. Senior Ryan Boyd made three saves in the third quarter and junior John Nagy completed the team shutout with two saves in the fourth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Haley's five-point game pushed him up two spots on the program's career points list. He passed Will Keigler '10 (212) and Dave Warfield '75 (213) for seventh place, and he now needs 11 more to pass Colin Dougherty '00 (224) for sixth.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals held a final 37-7 advantage in total shots and 31-5 in shots on goal, which included a 29-1 margin on total attempts in the first half and 26-0 on goal.
- W&L went a perfect 18-for-18 on clear attempts, while the Quakers were successful on 10-of-12. Ground balls also favored the hosts, 38-9.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 p.m. start.
