No. 15 Women’s Tennis cruises to 11-0 start, gets fourth ranked win of spring

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 15 Washington and Lee women's tennis team won eight of the nine matches played on Tuesday and claimed all seven team points in a home win against No. 32 Whitman.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (11-0) won 2-of-3 doubles matches to open the day to take the doubles point. Sophomore Greer Webb and first-year Margarette Berdy kicked things off with a 6-1 win at No. 3, before senior Grace Lorenz and sophomore Allie Murrell won, 6-3, at No. 2.
  • Murrell got the first win in singles for W&L in a 6-2, 6-1 final at No. 4, followed by Lorenz 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. Senior Lauren Long then clinched the match for the Generals, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1.
  • Sophomore Sarah Donnelly continued the Generals' winning ways at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Renata Rosell, while senior Riho Iijima also cruised to a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
  • The No. 5 singles match was the last to be decided, with Berdy securing the 7-0 team victory in comeback fashion. Berdy dropped her first set, 2-6, but battled back for a 6-2 win herself in the second set. In the decisive third-set tiebreak, Berdy faced match point down 5-9, but she proceeded to win six straight points to pull off the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Long's and Donnelly's wins in singles came against nationally ranked opponents in No. 11 Nana Vang and No. 32 Rosell, respectively. Both Whitman players are also ranked inside the Top 10 in the West Region.
  • The Generals' win on Tuesday marked the team's fourth win of the spring against a ranked team, and it was the second time in those four games W&L has not surrendered a team point.
  • Berdy extended her winning streak in singles to nine games, and she now has a team-best 11-1 record in singles play. Lorenz improved to 10-1 in singles with her seventh consecutive win.
