LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 15 Washington and Lee women's tennis team clinched its 10th consecutive win on Saturday in a 5-2 victory at home over No. 34 Mary Washington.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The match got off to a rocky start for the Generals (10-0), as the Eagles (5-1) won all three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead. All three doubles matches were decided by just two games each.
- All six singles matches ended in straight sets, with the Blue and White picking up wins at Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. First-year Sarah Ladd had the biggest win of the day at 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 6 match and sophomore Allie Murrell lost only three games at No. 4.
- Senior Lauren Long (6-2, 6-2) and first-year Margarette Berdy (6-1, 6-3) surrendered only four games each, with senior Grace Lorenz completing the W&L wins with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3.
- The Eagles got their singles point at No. 2, as Isabella Rotaru edged sophomore Sarah Donnelly 6-4, 6-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The No. 2 singles match featured a Top-20 regional matchup, with Rotaru currently ranked No. 17 in the Atlantic South Region and Donnelly at No. 20.
- Donnelly's loss in singles was just the third loss in dual-match play for the Generals this season, as they improved to 57-3. W&L remains undefeated (10-0) at Nos. 3, 4 and 5.
- Berdy extended her team-high singles winning streak to eight with her victory at No. 5. She is a team-best 10-1 this season and 6-0 in dual-match play.
- Lorenz's win boosted her career combined wins total to 94. Between singles and doubles, Lorenz is 94-37.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action on Tuesday when they host No. 32 Whitman at 4:00 p.m. It will be the second all-time meeting between the Generals and Blues, the first since March 15, 2017 (W&L, 9-0).
