No. 15 Generals collect ninth straight win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team posted its fourth straight 7-0 win and ninth consecutive victory overall on Wednesday, besting Averett on the road.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Lauren Long and sophomore Sarah Donnelly made quick work at No. 1 with a 6-0 win, before junior Haley Stoltz and first-year Sarah Ladd clinched the doubles point at No. 3, 6-3.
  • The Cougars (2-2, 1-1 ODAC) picked up their lone win of the day at No. 2 doubles, as Elisa Battermann and Dilara Sultanova topped Grace Lorenz and Allie Murrell, 6-3.
  • The Generals (9-0, 6-0 ODAC) proceeded to win all six singles matches in straight sets. Long capped her perfect day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1, while Ladd dropped just one game at No. 5.
  • Donnelly (2) and Murrell (4) surrendered only three games total en route to wins, with Lorenz claiming both her sets, 6-2, at No. 3. Stoltz rounded out the singles winners at No. 6 as she edged Sunna Maass 7-6 (5), 6-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • W&L improved to 52-2 on the season in singles dual matches and extended their record to 30-0 in conference singles matches.
  • Long improved to 4-1 in singles matches this season, all from the No. 1 position. Her four wins lead all players from a singular singles position. She and Donnelly also increased their perfect start in doubles to 5-0.
  • Wednesday's 7-0 victory marked the eighth total sweep of the season for the Generals. They have only dropped two team points in nine matches this season, which came in a 5-2 win against No. 18 Case Western Reserve on February 21.

The Generals will step out of conference play for their next four matches, starting with no. 34 Mary Washington on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
