LEXINGTON, Va. - Behind 17 runs on 15 hits, the Washington and Lee University baseball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 17-8, on Wednesday night at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights (2-12) got off to a quick start as Seth Lloyd beat out an infield single before Zack Geertsen doubled to left center to put a pair of runners in scoring position. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Mason Jones blasted a three-run home run to left-center field to give them a 3-0 lead.
- Alex Caywood led off the bottom half of the inning with a single before Andrew Thornton drew a walk to put two runners on. Nick Caywood drove in his brother the next at-bat with a double off the wall before Camdyn Teague drove in N. Caywood and Thornton with a double to left-center to knot the game at three.
- The Generals (7-5-1) took the lead in the bottom of the second as Oakley Rempel led off the inning with a single to left field before moving to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. A. Caywood drove him in as he poked a single through the right side, giving W&L a 4-3 lead.
- In the bottom of the 4th, Rempel led off the inning with another single before moving over two bases on a steal attempt as the throw down to second sailed into center field. A. Caywood drove him in two batters later as he hit another single up the middle to extend the lead to two.
- Seth Lloyd led off the top of the 5th for the Knights with a double down the right-field line before coming around to score on a Zack Geertsen double into the left-center field gap to make it a one-run game.
- The Generals added eight runs on five hits and four errors in the bottom of the 5th to take a 13-4 lead. N. Caywood beat out an infield single before Nick Lagges blasted a two-run home run down the left-field line, his second of the season, to give W&L a 7-4 lead.
- After Camdyn Teague drew a walk and Jackson Rogish reached via an error, Rempel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Ryan McGovern singled through the left side to drive in Rogish before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. W&L had runners on the corners after A. Caywood reached on an error before McGovern scored on a wild pitch.
- Thornton drew a walk to put runners on first and second before N. Caywood poked a single into center field to give W&L an 11-4 lead. Lagges reached on the fourth error of the inning before Teague drove in a pair of runs on a single to put the Generals up by nine.
- SVU added a pair in the top of the 6th as Marcelino Leonardo Jr. drew a walk before Brooks Burdette drove him in on a double to cut the lead to eight. Seth Lloyd drove in the Knights' sixth run as Burdette scored on a ground out.
- The Knights made it a five-run game in the top of the 8th as a walk and single put runners on the corners. Geertsen drove in Robley with a single before Lloyd scored on a Mason Jones sacrifice fly to make it 13-8.
- The Blue and White scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the 8th to take a 17-8 lead. A. Caywood drove in a pair of runs on a single up the middle before he came around to score on a wild pitch.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals moved to 7-5-1 on the season, winning their second straight in as many days at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
- Alex Caywood paced the Generals' offense with a 4-for-6 day at the plate with four RBI and three runs, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Camdyn Teague led the Generals with five RBI on three hits in his five at-bats with a double and a walk, marking his sixth multi-hit performance in seven games.
- Bob Burr (2-0) was credited with the win after allowing three runs on three hits with a strikeout in his one inning of work. Alex Caywood earned the start on the mound, the first of his career, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts in four innings.
SOUTHERN VIRGINIA GAME NOTES
- Southern Virginia fell to 2-12 on the season with the loss.
- Seth Lloyd and Zack Geertsen led the Knights' offense with three hits each while Mason Jones drove in a team-high four runs.
- Thomas Bradley (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with a pair of walks.
