Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – In a matchup of nationally ranked programs, No. 9 Washington and Lee dropped a 13-6 non-conference contest to No. 8 Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.
The Generals (3-2) battled throughout but were unable to overcome a five-goal first quarter by the Sea Gulls (4-0), who used early momentum and efficient clearing to maintain control.
Game Summary
Salisbury set the tone early, scoring five goals in the opening quarter to take a 5-0 lead. Audrey Harrington recorded a hat trick in the first period, and Avery Dunbar added a late tally to give the hosts a significant cushion after 15 minutes.
The Sea Gulls extended the run to 6-0 early in the second before Washington and Lee found its footing. Lara Baki broke through at the 8:05 mark of the second quarter, and Katie Reed followed with a goal off an assist from Kelly Polacek to cut the deficit to 6-2. Salisbury answered just before halftime to take a 7-2 advantage into the break.
Reed struck again midway through the third quarter, finishing a feed from Betsy Clarke to make it 7-3. After Salisbury responded with two quick goals, Maris Smutz converted a free-position opportunity to pull the Generals within 9-4. However, the Sea Gulls countered late in the third to maintain a six-goal edge.
Washington and Lee made one final push in the fourth quarter. Betty Boatwright scored on a player-up free-position chance at 10:27, and Hannah Van Son added another man-up goal less than a minute later to trim the margin to 11-6. Salisbury closed the contest with two late goals to seal the 13-6 decision.
