LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 5 Washington and Lee University women's basketball team secured their 21st straight victory of the season as they defeated the University of Lynchburg, 67-33, on Saturday afternoon in the Hill City.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A three-pointer from Kayla Terry gave Lynchburg (11-10, 4-8 ODAC) a 5-3 lead early in the opening quarter, but a jumper from Mary Schleusner sparked a 10-0 run for the Generals (21-0, 12-0 ODAC), giving the Blue and White an eight-point advantage heading into the second quarter.
- W&L extended its lead to 12 in the second quarter behind baskets from Schleusner and Quinn McGuinness before an Ashley Vandergrift three-pointer trimmed the margin back to single digits. After an Icy Keneah basket pushed the lead back to 11, Kate Littlejohn knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute to send the Generals into halftime with a 23-14 lead.
- Sarah Zimmerman opened the third quarter with back-to-back buckets to extend the advantage to 13 before Audra Petty answered with a layup for Lynchburg. The Generals then erupted for a 15-2 run to take a 24-point lead into the fourth quarter, with points coming from Keneah, Zimmerman, Sam Collins, Caroline Shimp, Zou Raine, and Riley Bryant.
- McGuinness, Schleusner, and Zimmerman each added layups early in the fourth quarter to propel W&L to a 50-23 lead. The margin continued to grow as five points from Zimmerman and a three-pointer from Collins gave the Blue and White a 33-point cushion with under five minutes remaining. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch before Arden Alvarez scored the game's final points with a jumper, securing a 67-33 victory.
