2026 W&L Men's Basketball Senior Day

Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Loughlin's 24, Roberton's late three highlight W&L's Senior Day win over Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team got big performances from its seniors, plus a vital late three from junior Conor Roberton, to fend off Guilford in a thrilling 97-96 Senior Day win over Guilford on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (16-5, 8-4 ODAC) controlled the pace the of the game from the opening tip-off well into the second half with a 79-66 advantage with 9:57 left in regulation. The Quakers (11-10, 5-7 ODAC) then scored six straight points on the front end of an 18-4 run to gain their first lead of the game, 84-83, with 5:25 remaining.
  • Both teams kept up the intensity and exchanged three lead changes over the next three minutes, before GC's Ke Edwards drove in for a layup to tie the game at 89. On the next possession and with the shot clock winding down, Roberton, who had just one three-point attempt all season entering the day, stepped into a triple and nailed it to put W&L back up by three.
  • Senior A.J. Thomas proceeded to go 3-of-4 at the free throw line over the next two possessions, making it a four-point W&L lead with 11 seconds left. Gabe Proctor then hit a heavily contested three on the wing with seven seconds left to keep it at a one-point game.
  • On the ensuing in-bounds play, senior Colin Ryan was fouled and went to the line for two shots. After making the first, he missed the second, but the miss was nullified by a lane violation. Ryan capitalized on his second chance this time and made the free throw (97-94).
  • With 5.3 seconds to play, Dawson Edwards drove down the court and laid the ball in to get the score to 97-96. However, only 0.3 was left on the clock and the Generals had a clean pass on the ensuing in-bound play to run the remainder of the clock out.
  • W&L had a strong start to the game, opening on a 15-5 run across six minutes, with eight of those points coming from sophomore Bryce Breeden. Guilford answered with a 12-4 run to get back within two, but W&L responded with another run of 13-3 to build back a 12-point cushion. Thomas had a team-high seven points in that span, including two high-flying dunks.
  • From the 6:58 mark of the first half to 9:57 left in the second, both teams made 16 field goals and saw Guilford score 46 of the game's 90 points in that time. The teams were led during that stretch by Braylen Salters of Guilford and John Loughlin of the Generals, who scored 24 and 18 points, respectively, to keep their teams going.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Loughlin was the Generals' top scorer, as he dropped a career-high 24 points on 8-of-14 from the outside, to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore Connor Amorosi was a key contributor on both ends of the floor with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.
  • Breeden finished the day at 13 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting from the field (3-4 3pt FG), while Thomas ended the day at 12 points, five boards and three assists.
  • Roberton scored nine and made all four of his shot attempts, plus another nine points from first-year Addison Newkirk. Roberton dished out five assists, Newkirk had five rebounds and three assists, plus another seven boards and four helpers from senior Colin Ryan.
  • Salters led all scorers in the game with 34 points on 10-of-23 shooting, including 6-of-12 from outside and 8-of-9 at the foul line. Salters added seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
  • Ke Edwards followed with 23 points (9-14 FG) and seven boards, with Proctor (14) and D. Edwards (10) rounding out the top scorers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Loughlin's eight made triples not only set a new career high, but it also tied Thomas Feigin '25 and William Bruggeman '21 for the second-most in a game in program history. Loughlin is also now three makes from outside away from passing Nicholas George '18 (140) on the career threes list.
  • The 193 combined points scored on Saturday marked the highest-scoring game for W&L since a 117-103 loss to Roanoke in quadruple overtime in the 2023 ODAC quarterfinals. It was the highest-scoring regulation game since December 20, 2021, which was a 103-91 loss against Christopher Newport.
  • The Generals' win over the Quakers gives them the season series sweep. They won their two games over Guilford this season by a combined three points.
  • Saturday's victory also clinched an ODAC Tournament berth for the Generals. They currently sit in fourth place in the ODAC standings and are four games up on ninth-place Shenandoah with four games left. W&L owns that head-to-head tiebreaker with the Hornets after their 73-69 win in Winchester last month.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals shot 49.3 percent (33-67) for the game and better than 48 percent in both halves. They made 15-of-32 threes (.469), which came on 45 percent or higher in both halves.
  • After making just 25 percent (10-40) of their shots in the first half, the Quakers made 57.5 percent (23-40) in the second half to finish at 41.3 percent for the game. They connected on 42.9 percent (12-28) from long range and 78.3 percent (18-23) at the free throw line.
  • W&L held a slight 44-41 edge in total rebounds, but the Quakers had the upper hand on the offensive glass (17-14).
  • The Blue and White had a positive scoring margin in second-chance points (16-15) and fastbreak points, while the Quakers topped the Generals in points off turnovers (18-7), bench points (33-31) and points in the paint (38-32).
