LEXINGTON, Va. - The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball notched their 20th-straight win of the season as they defeated Eastern Mennonite Universit 70-28 inside Holekamp Gym on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Generals (20-0, 11-0 ODAC) scored the first four points of the game at the free-throw line, with Sarah Zimmerman and Zou Raine each converting a pair. After Jayda Jones knocked down one of two free throws to make it 6-1, the Blue and White closed the opening quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 13-2 lead into the second quarter.
- W&L built a 21-point advantage in the second quarter following a 12-2 run that featured baskets from Mary Schleusner, Sam Collins, Sarah Zimmerman, and Megan Zimmerman. Jeriyah Osborne and Jazmyn Taylor of EMU (5-15, 0-11 ODAC) connected on back-to-back jumpers to trim the deficit to 17, but a pair of free throws from Raine sparked a 9-2 run to send the Generals into halftime with a 34-10 lead.
- The Blue and White continued to roll in the third quarter, using a 14-3 run to stretch the margin to 35 points. The spurt included a three-point play from Caroline Shimp along with baskets from Megan Zimmerman, Schleusner, and Riley Bryant. The Royals closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 31 heading into the final period.
- Elka Prechel and Kaylene Todd traded three-pointers to open the fourth quarter before W&L rattled off 12 unanswered points to push the lead to 65-24. EMU ended the drought with a basket from Jeriyah Osborne, but the Generals closed the contest on a 5-2 run, highlighted by points from Shimp, Emily Straughn, and Collins, to secure a 70-28 victory.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Riley Bryant and Caroline Shimp led all scorers with 12 points apiece, with Bryant also grabbing 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Bryant shot 5-of-6 from the field, while Shimp knocked down five of her eight attempts. Mary Schleusner added another double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Sarah Zimmerman also reached double figures, scoring 10 points while pulling down five rebounds. Quinn McGuinness dished out a team-high three assists.
- Kaylene Todd led the Royals with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field, including a made three-pointer. Jeriyah Osborne paced the team on the glass with five rebounds while adding two assists.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals extended their winning streak to 20 games while notching their 12th straight victory over the Royals. The win also marked W&L's 11th straight victory at Holekamp, dating back to Feb. 8, 2025, when the Generals defeated the University of Lynchburg, 91-57.
- The Generals shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the field, including a game-high 58.3 percent (7-of-12) in the fourth quarter. W&L also went 19-of-26 from the free-throw line (73.1%).
- The Blue and White dominated the glass, out rebounding the Royals by 30, 65-35, while committing 14 turnovers compared to EMU's 10. W&L scored 42 points in the paint and added eight points off the Royals' turnovers, with the bench contributing 42 points as well.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
- Schleusner moved up to No. 6 all-time in NCAA history in career double-doubles with 86, tying Lauren Gustin (BYU). She is also just 24 rebounds away from moving into second place all-time in career rebounds across all NCAA divisions.
- With her one steal today, Schleusner now ranks third all-time in career steals with 185, surpassing Meg Ingram '12. She is also seven blocked shots shy of breaking the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record.
