No. 13 W&L rallies past Denison, Meyer nets OT winner

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore James Meyer netted the game-ending goal with 1:17 left in overtime to push the No. 13 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 14-13 victory over Denison on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With the Generals (2-2) holding a 7-6 lead entering the third quarter, the Big Red (1-3) proceeded to go on a 5-1 run to make it an 11-8 game in their favor with 2:01 left in the third.
  • Senior James Haley ended the Denison run with a goal at the 19-second mark of the third, which spurred a 4-0 run for the Blue and White to help them regain a 12-11 lead with 10:14 left in regulation. Four different players scored for the Generals during that run, with Haley adding an assist on the fourth goal.
  • Denison, once again, jumped in front with a Macky Peck goal at the 8:14 mark and a Jonah Frank score with 2:05 left.
  • The Big Red then got a stop on the ensuing possession, but senior Andrew Lehman forced a turnover on the Denison clear attempt. Lehman got the ground ball and passed off to Haley, who found first-year Luke Caldwell for the equalizer in front of the goal with 32 seconds left.
  • The Generals got a turnover to start overtime and proceeded to hang on to the ball for the remainder of the game. They patiently waited for an opening in the defense, until Caldwell ran behind the goal, turned and found a cutting Meyer for the close-range walk-off score.
  • Denison was the stronger side across the first 20 minutes, as they held a 5-3 lead and only trailed once (1-0). At the 9:06 mark of the second, first-year Tucker Davis scored the first goal in a 4-0 run that flipped the game from a two-goal W&L deficit to a two-goal lead.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • For the fourth straight game to begin his collegiate career, Caldwell led the Generals in points with seven (5g, 2a). Haley followed up with five points (2g, 3a) and five ground balls, with senior Elliot Cohen dishing out three assists.
  • Five different Generals caused one turnover each, with senior Chris Datz leading that bunch with five ground balls. Lehman and senior Colin Beatty had one caused turnover apiece, as well, and three ground balls each.
  • Jack Moellering was the top Denison scorer with five points on four goals and an assist. Brady Monturio (2g, 2a) was next at four points, followed by Jonah Frank (2g, 1a), Kevin Berutich (1g, 2a) and Macky Peck (3g) all with three points.
  • Charlie Haight caused a game-high three turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Andrew Albert led all non-faceoff players with four ground balls, while Frank added two caused turnovers and three ground balls to his line.
  • Luke Marascio was the game's top face-off man with an 8-for-10 performance and four ground balls.
  • In goal, W&L's Zach Rosenberg earned the win with 11 saves and three ground balls, while Denison's Albert saved 15 shots. Both goalies covered all 62:43 of action.
TEAM STATS:
  • After both teams took seven shots in the first quarter, the Generals outshot the Big Red 41-27 afterwards for a final shot tally of 48-34. W&L put 29 of their shots on goal to 24 from Denison.
  • The Big Red scooped up 40 ground balls to 30 for W&L, while the Generals had the better clear percentage at 0.950 (19-20) compared to the visitors at 0.833 (20-24).
