LEXINGTON, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a strong third-quarter surge to secure a 10-7 non-conference victory over the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday evening at Watt Field.
The Generals (2-1) capitalized on multiple player-up opportunities and received a four-goal performance from Lara Baki to hold off the Eagles (1-2) in a competitive midweek matchup.
Game Summary
Mary Washington struck first just 1:17 into the contest, but W&L answered quickly as Baki evened the score midway through the opening quarter. Baki added a free-position goal in the final minute of the period to give the Generals a 2-1 advantage after one.
The Eagles reclaimed momentum early in the second quarter with back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 lead. W&L responded with composure, converting on player-up chances to swing the game. Hannah Van Son buried a free-position goal to tie the contest at 3-3, and Baki followed with her third goal of the evening off an assist from Grace Kim. Emma Marsh added a man-up score late in the half to send W&L into the break with a 5-3 lead.
The Generals created separation in the third quarter, outscoring Mary Washington 4-2 in the frame. Van Son struck again on a player-up opportunity assisted by Kim, Baki netted her fourth of the night, and Katie Reed finished a feed from Kelly Polacek to push the margin to 8-3. After the Eagles cut the deficit to 8-5, Payton Haley scored with nine seconds remaining in the quarter to give W&L a 9-5 cushion entering the final period.
Grace Kim extended the lead to 10-5 midway through the fourth quarter with a free-position goal. Mary Washington added two late tallies, but the Generals' defense absorbed the pressure and closed out the three-goal victory.
