Baseball Staves Off Piedmont in D3 Showcase Finale

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - In a game that featured 44 hits and 37 runs, the Washington and Lee University baseball team staved off a late rally by Piedmont University to secure a 19-18 win at the D3 Showcase.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (2-3) wasted no time, plating three runs in the top of the 1st. Nathan DeWitte led off the game with a single before Nick Caywood reached base on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Following a Nick Lagges walk to load the bases, Oakley Rempel beat out an infield single to give W&L a 1-0 lead. Jackson Rogish wore a pitch to drive in another run before Samuel Chase singled to right field to give them a three-run cushion.
  • Landen Rucker and DeWitte registered back-to-back singles to start the second before Alex Caywood laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position. Andrew Thornton cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line to give the Generals a 5-0 lead before coming around to score two at-bats later on a sacrifice fly.
  • W&L plated two more runs in the 3rd as Rucker doubled to right-center field before DeWitte and A. Caywood each drew walks to load the bases. Thornton came through once again, singling to right field and driving in Rucker and DeWitte to give the Blue and White an 8-0 lead.
  • Piedmont (3-3) got on the board in the bottom half of the 3rd as Carson Funk reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. Davin Miller drove him in on a single to make it an 8-1 ballgame.
  • Lagges kicked off the 4th inning with a double to right field before Oakley Rempel singled to right-center and advanced to second as the ball got past the Lions' center fielder. Rogish loaded the bases with a walk before Chase drove in Lagges on a sacrifice fly to put W&L up 9-1.
  • Matt Dupuis wore a pitch to lead off the inning before stealing second. He came around to score two at-bats later following a Generals' error.
  • The Blue and White added three more in the top of the 5th as Thornton drove in A. Caywood with a triple to left-center field before scoring on a sacrifice fly. The next at-bat, Lagges blasted a solo home run to right field to expand the Generals' lead to ten.
  • The Lions made it interesting in the bottom half of the 5th as they plated seven runs on six hits to make it a 12-9 game. A single and back-to-back hit-by-pitches loaded the bases before five singles and an error drove in their runs.
  • With two outs in the top of the 6th, A. Caywood doubled to left field before coming around to score on a Thornton single to right field. N. Caywood followed that up with a single of his own before Lagges' single drove in Thornton to put the Generals up by five.
  • Piedmont loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of walks and a double. Dupuis came around to score on a double play before a Justin Shaffer double drove in Cruz Mullinix to make it a three-run ballgame.
  • Rogish singled to start the 7th before moving to third on back-to-back ground outs. DeWitte drove him in with a single through the left side to extend the lead to 15-11.
  • Singles from N. Caywood and Rempel, as well as a Rogish walk, loaded the bases in the top of the 8th for the Blue and White. Jonathan French came in to pinch-hit and drove in a runner on a hit by pitch before Rempel and Rogish scored on back-to-back wild pitches. French plated the Generals' final run on a ground out.
  • Piedmont made it a six-run ballgame heading into the final inning of play as they scored two runs on four hits. Ben Bodoh led off the inning with a triple before Shaffer hit an RBI double to left-center. Funk drove in Shaffer two batters later with a single through the right side to make it 19-13.
  • After the Generals went scoreless for the first time all game, the Lions clawed their way back within one. Mullinix drew a walk before Ryan and Bodoh each singled to load the bases. Shaffer came through and drove in a run with a single before a walk drove in another run to make it 19-15. Funk grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Bodoh to score, before Miller blasted a double into right-center, driving in a pair of runs to make it 19-18.
  • With the tying run on second and two outs, Brody Pasieka struck out Few to secure the one-run win for the Blue and White.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals secured their second win of the season and their second victory in three days over the Lions.
  • Oakley Rempel led the offense with five hits, tying the program record for a single game with Jacob Jackson, in his seven at-bats with an RBI. Andrew Thornton drove in six runs with a 4-for-6 performance at the plate, recording two singles, a double, and a triple. The Generals had seven players register at least two hits in the win.
  • Bob Burr (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching 3.1 innings in relief, allowing seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Brody Pasieka earned the save after closing out the game, allowing one hit while striking out one batter.
PIEDMONT GAME NOTES
  • The Lions fell to 3-3 on the season with the loss.
  • Justin Shaffer led Piedmont with five hits and four RBI while Davin Miller added four RBI on four hits. Cody Funk and Jack Ryan each had two or more RBI while six Lions had a pair of hits.
  • Will Schmidt (1-1) earned the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2.2. Innings of work.
UP NEXT
  • The Generals are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 24 as they take on Johnson & Wales (N.C.) in Charlotte. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Knothole Sports Complex.
