LEXINGTON, Va. – First-years
Luke Caldwell (8 pts) and
Zach Rosenberg (15 saves) led the charge on both ends of the field, as the No. 12 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team ran away with a 17-6 win over Ohio Northern on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (1-2) raced out to a 6-2 lead through one quarter of play, which included scoring the first three goals of the game. Caldwell and senior James Haley both had three points on two goals and an assist in the opening frame.
- Things continued to snowball on the Polar Bears (2-1) in the second quarter when W&L built their lead up to 13-4 by the half. Caldwell scored twice more for a four-goal first half, with first-year Tucker Davis scoring twice, as well.
- After a quiet third quarter that saw both teams score once apiece, the Generals closed out the game with a strong fourth quarter. They got goals from senior Jack Booth, sophomore Jack Dalton and sophomore Charlie Hodulik, as Hodulik spun through traffic and finished from close range with 49 seconds left.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Caldwell's eight points came on five goals and three assists, his exact point, goal and assist output through his first two games this season. Caldwell took 11 shots, put eight on goal and also had three ground balls and a caused turnover.
- Dalton and Haley followed with six points on three goals and three assists apiece, while Booth (1g, 1a) and Davis (2g) rounded out the multi-point players. Junior Thomas Moxley had a strong day on face-offs, winning 14-of-22 with nine ground balls.
- Senior Jay O'Keefe caused a W&L-high four turnovers and got to three ground balls, with first-year Lawson Marshall contributing two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. First-year Eli Smink also caused two turnovers.
- Rosenberg posted 15 saves in 55:01 of action on the day to pick up his second straight win. He has made 34 saves on 52 shots on goal for a 0.654 save percentage.
- Luke Ferro was the only ONU player to have multiple points, as he scored twice. Nine total Polar Bears had at least one point in the game.
- Peyton Lich played all 60 minutes between the pipes for ONU, and he stopped 14-of-31 shots on goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Haley's six-point performance moved him into the program's career Top 10 for total points. He entered the day three points behind Alex Brown '24 (176) and Cameron Dabir '15 (176), and he now trails Sam Englehart '73 (191) by 12 for ninth.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Polar Bears 55-30 on the day, getting at least 12 shots off in each quarter. They also put 31 shots on goal to 22 for ONU.
- W&L was nearly perfect on defensive clears at 31-of-32, while the Polar Bears went 21-of-26.
- The Generals picked up 42 ground balls compared to ONU's 23. W&L was also a perfect 5-for-5 in man-down defense, while the offense scored on its only man-up opportunity.
