BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The fourth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team defeated Bridgewater College, 67-38, in their final regular season road game of the season on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jay Garcia scored the game's first points with a jumper before the Generals (24-0, 15-0 ODAC) responded with a 10-2 run to take a six-point lead. Elka Prechel knocked down a pair of three-pointers, while Quinn McGuinness and Sarah Zimmerman each added layups. The Blue and White closed the first quarter on a 12-5 run to carry a 13-point advantage into the second period.
- Megan Zimmerman opened the second quarter with a three-pointer before a pair of layups from the Eagles (19-5, 12-3 ODAC) trimmed the lead to 12. After a basket from Mary Schleusner, both teams endured a four-minute scoring drought until Garcia converted a layup to make it 27-15. A pull-up jumper from Sam Collins sparked a 9-0 run to close the half, sending the Generals into the break with a commanding 36-15 lead.
- Bridgewater opened the third quarter with an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to 15. However, Riley Bryant answered with five straight points to ignite a 15-2 surge that pushed the Generals' lead to 56-28 entering the final quarter. The run included six points from Sarah Zimmerman and two apiece from McGuinness and Megan Zimmerman.
- The Eagles narrowed the margin to 24 following back-to-back layups from Riley Corcoran and Jaiden Polston. Caroline Shimp responded with a pair of free throws, and Megan Zimmerman sealed the 67-38 victory with a three-pointer.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Sarah Zimmerman led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting while adding six rebounds, five blocks, and two assists. Mary Schleusner recorded her 90th career double-double in the win, scoring 11 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. She also contributed one assist, one block, and one steal. Quinn McGuinness and Icy Keneah each dished out two assists, while McGuinness and Sam Collins led the team with two steals apiece.
- Jay Garcia paced the Eagles with 14 points on 7-of-18 shooting, along with 11 rebounds, one assist, and one block. Jaiden Polston led Bridgewater with two blocks, while Aylin Humpherys recorded a game-high three steals.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals extended their winning streak to 24 games with the victory this afternoon while notching their second straight win over the Eagles. The triumph also marked W&L's first win in Nininger Hall since Jan. 20, 2022.
- W&L shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field and knocked down five three-pointers. The Generals were efficient at the free-throw line, converting 20 of their 22 attempts (90.9%).
- The Blue and White out rebounded Bridgewater, 41-32, while committing nine fewer turnovers. W&L scored 28 points in the paint and added 12 second-chance points. The bench contributed 28 points, and the Generals scored 15 points off the Eagles' 18 turnovers.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
- Mary Schleusner moved up to No. 4 in NCAA history in career double-doubles with her 90th this evening, tying Cherly Taylor of Tennessee Tech '98.
- With her five blocks today, Sarah Zimmerman became the fourth player in program history to surpass 100 career blocks, moving up to No. 5 all-time in program history.
