LEXINGTON, Va. - The fourth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball sent off their seven seniors with a 85-62 win over Guilford College while capping off the program's first undefeated regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded buckets to start the first quarter until a pair of Riley Bryant layups and free throws from Quinn McGuinness propelled W&L (25-0, 16-0 ODAC) to an 18-12 lead. Taylor Dunn of Guilford (18-7, 9-7 ODAC) added a layup to make it a four-point game before McGuinness knocked down two more free throws and Sarah Zimmerman added a layup to send W&L into the second quarter with a 22-15 lead.
- McGuinness and Mary Schleusner added a pair of buckets to give the Generals an 11-point lead early in the second quarter. The Quakers trimmed the lead to seven after a 7-2 scoring stretch that featured a triple from Karly Glahn. The Blue and White closed out the first half on a 19-2 run to head into the break with a 48-27 advantage.
- Zou Raine and Schleusner combined for six points to open the second half, expanding the lead to 25. Both teams exchanged baskets throughout the third quarter, with the Generals maintaining a 20-point edge. W&L pushed its lead back to 25 as McGuinness completed a three-point play before back-to-back buckets from Anna Giannopoulou and Briahna Scott made it a 67-44 game heading into the fourth.
- Scott and Giannopoulou opened the final quarter with the first two baskets to trim the lead to 19. However, the Generals answered with an 8-2 run to take a 75-50 lead, thanks to six points from Schleusner and two from Megan Zimmerman. Guilford responded with eight unanswered points to cut the deficit to 17 with four minutes remaining, but the Blue and White closed the game on a 10-2 run to secure the 85-62 win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Schleusner led all scorers with 31 points on 13-of-23 shooting while pulling down 21 rebounds. She also recorded five steals, three blocks, and one assist in the win. Quinn McGuinness added 18 points, dished out a team-high three assists, and registered four steals. Riley Bryant also reached double figures, scoring 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds and adding one block.
- Anna Giannopoulou paced the Quakers with 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting and seven rebounds. Karly Glahn contributed 11 points and one assist, while Briahna Scott and Markayla Massenburg each dished out two assists.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals capped off the first undefeated regular season in program history, marking their 25th straight win. The victory also marked their 14th consecutive win inside Holekamp Gym, dating back to Feb. 8, 2025.
- The Generals shot 36.1 percent (30-of-83) from the field while shooting over 40.0 percent in both the 1st and 2nd quarters. W&L was efficient at the free-throw line, converting 24 of its 30 attempts (80%).
- The Blue and White out rebounded Guilford by 20 (58-38) while committing 11 fewer turnovers. W&L scored 48 points in the paint and added 29 second-chance points. The bench contributed 28 points, and the Generals scored 28 points off Guilford's 22 turnovers.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
- W&L also became just the third program in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) history to post an undefeated conference record, joining Randolph-Macon and Roanoke College. It marks the sixth time in conference history that a team has gone unbeaten during the conference slate.
