No. 19 Generals kick-off spring slate with sweep of Shenandoah

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 19 Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 sweep of Shenandoah on Friday, with 11 different players contributing to the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (3-0, 2-0 ODAC) cruised in doubles play for the opening point, losing just two games total. Sophomore Jackie Daynovsky and first-year Lulu Koziol claimed a sweep at No. 3, with 6-1 wins apiece for sophomore Sarah Donnelly and senior Lauren Long at No. 1 and first-years Margarette Berdy and Sarah Ladd at No. 2.
  • Sophomore Greer Webb led the singles efforts with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 against Kendra Gillette. Senior Jordan Kach followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6, which ended the match.
  • Senior Annie Jennings picked up the first singles point for the Generals in a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4. Long and senior Riho Iijima were next to finish with matching 6-0, 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
  • Sophomore Allie Murrell rounded out the Generals in action on Friday, and she notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Murrell led Atlee Hilliard by a 4-3 score through seven games in the first set, before she went on to close her match by winning eight games in a row.
MILESTONE WATCH:
  • Long's wins increased her career total to 99 between singles and doubles play. She has career marks of 52-11 in singles and 47-20 in doubles.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will get back on the court on Friday, February 20, when they kick-off Groundhog Palooza with a 5:00 p.m. first serve against No. 22 Swarthmore, which marks a rematch from the teams' NCAA Second Round meeting last season.
